What do you do when you can’t sleep, Constant Reader?

It’s a decidedly female dilemma, something hormonal and related to cortisol levels. A physician once explained the phenomena to me: that the mid-afternoon stress level is mirrored twelve hours later, at 2:30 a.m. Thus, the awakening period…

Huh, I thought at the time, but didn’t say: I didn’t know I was stressed in mid-afternoon. At the very least, I though potential stress was mediated by my daily after-lunch nap!

And, how to explain what one of my favorite-and-best pediatrician referral sources once shared: many of his pediatric patients shared the sleep disturbance affinity. Why would little girls experience the apparent ‘need’ to wake up and worry after midnight?

If you share the experience – and/or have thoughts about the cause (we all know the effect) of the problem, please share.

And share your remedies, please and thank. Comments appreciated and applauded!

Some people I know pick up their favorite books, from their personal mountain of to-be-read books, stacked beside the bed. Some get up to warm a glass of milk to sip while they contemplate dreams, mostly of how to get back to sleep.

Some of my friends pull up their tablets and laptops to surf the web, shadow people on Facebook, or stream movies. Others write their next book, plotting to get back to sleep.

I have an app – the only one for which I paid – called ‘Simply Rain’ on my phone. Sadly, I can only use it when I’m alone, as I was when my husband traveled on business and bunked in a Marriott hotel somewhere across the west. This I know based on recent experience, for he startled awake in the middle of the night and rapidly checked all of the windows and patio doors – thinking it was truly raining.

Ha, a man experienced the ‘woman thing’ of awakening in the middle of the night… But… did he lie awake after furtively checking our entire house and yard perimeter?
